Having kids in the house is a constant source of stress. With the endless list of housework and them running around all the time, it is simply impossible to keep an eye on them round the clock. With the first child, every sound makes you freak out. After the second child, especially if you have boys, bumps and falls are everyday occurrences. It’s nothing to feel guilty about if you don’t rush to find the source of each sound, and if the reason you go find your kids is only to assess the damage.
A little prevention goes a long way for your peace of mind. Childproofing your house can be a big help. Take extra care with the kids’ bedroom furniture, because the bedroom is one place where your kids spend a lot of time. Make sure shelves are properly attached or hinged, so that they don’t fall down and harm your kids. Choose childrens bedroom furniture pieces with no sharp edges. For those furniture you already have at home, furniture stores sell various items for childproofing your home. Avoid breakable pieces of furniture; these things can wait until your kids are older and not so boisterous. Arrange the furniture in such a way that your kids can move around freely in the bedroom and they don’t easily bump into things. Chests, drawers, and other storage furniture make it convenient to put away your kids’ stuff and at the same time help you teach them to be neat. As neat as kids can be, at least.

Folding tables and chairs for guys night
July 1st, 2009Ok, it’s not easy to talk the wife or significant other into letting you have a guys night at the house (or a girls night for that matter). Someone has to make themselves scarce and the kitchen table may never be the same. Not to mention that she may not be happy that your construction worker friends might have to sit on her new couch. Not to worry. Get yourself some folding tables and chairs. They will stack neatly out of the way in the garage or storage shed and be ready to come alive once the guys (or gals) have come over. The tables can come in any size and be used as a game table, food table, or anything else that might be in the way of guy time. The chairs are exceptionally handy because no one has to dirty up the love seat or steal your spot on the recliner. When it is all said and done, simply fold everything up and back to storage it goes. Quick, simple, cheap. And the best part is, once you own the tables and chairs, having friends over will be a good excuse to use them. Just don’t forget to fold them up and put them away before they are mistaken for your new living room set.
Versatile but space-efficient
June 13th, 2009A very simple way to add atmosphere to your kitchen is to supply your counter with a set of bar stools. One of the really fabulous things about bar stools as furniture is their stylistic versatility. Bar stools come in almost every kitchen style. In a more formal classic kitchen, there are metal bar stools with varying degrees of ornamentation and curlicues on the legs. Bar stools can add a fifties-style diner look. They can also be state of the art to fit into a more modern kitchen. And if you want a casual atmosphere, get bar stools with an advertisement or slogan on the seat. Bar stools can be subtle. When not in use, they can be tucked away under the lip of the counter, so that their effect on the kitchen is definite but not obvious. Bar stools can also be bold, if you choose a loud design or pattern intended to draw attention to the furniture. The bottom line is, bar stools can take on and give out almost any look and still maintain its compact space-efficient structure.
Making Your Home Office as comfortable as it is productive
April 19th, 2009Congratulations! You are now working from home. You are released from that itchy old office chair that was missing an arm. And, you no longer have to share an office wall with the woman who only knew how to use the speaker portion of her phone. Now the onus is on you to identify what will make you comfortable enough to be productive. For me, my office was like a marriage proposal and a wedding: I introduced something old, something new, something borrowed and well, something sage green (sorry, no blue). Sometimes, you see, it is better to try out what works until you find your own comfort and productive zone. We had a wonderful old desk in the family, which has been through 3 generations. I gladly accepted that because it reminded me that working at home can be done, just as my father before me. It is comforting for me and because I was so familiar with it, there were no issues. The bookshelf was new. It is actually an entertainment center, housing a television and a radio. That’s right, I work better with ambient sound, albeit ones I can control (unlike speaker-phone woman). I borrowed a portfolio to house my writing clips, just until I figured out what kind I wanted/needed to purchase for myself. And, the sage green is for my big, plush chair, which helps me think when I am stuck, or just need a break. I hope you can find your zone for office furniture that makes your office as comfortable as it is productive too.
